About the Arizona Carindals

The Arizona Cardinals are one of only two franchises to have been in existence since the inception of the NFL. In fact, they are the oldest continuously run professional football team the in the United States. Founded in 1898 as an amateur team, they were originally called the “Morgan Athletic Club.” They were also called “Racine Normals” before finally being renamed the “Cardinals.” In 1922, they were changed from the “Racine Cardinals” to the “Chicago Cardinals.” Much of the franchise’s long and storied history comes from their years as a Chicago team. The Cardinals and the Decatur Staleys possess the oldest rivalry in the history of the NFL, having played each other twice in 1920 and splitting the series. The Cardinals won their first championship in 1925 after the Pottsville Maroons had their franchise revoked by the league. For one year in 1944, the Cardinals merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they went winless. The Cardinals finally won their next NFL championship in 1947, the first season that the league had a standardized 12-game season and also the first year that the championship game was televised. The next big step in the franchise’s history came in 1960, when they moved to St. Louis. Often called the “football Cardinals” to distinguish them from the baseball team of the same name, the St. Louis Cardinals experienced some success, including an incredible fourth-quarter victory against the Buccaneers in 1987. However, they would move once again in 1988, finally becoming the Arizona Cardinals that we know today. It wasn’t until 2009 that players like Larry Fitzgerald, Kurt Warner, and Matt Leinart helped the Cardinals make their first Super Bowl appearance. Although they lost, this was still a great moment in Cardinals franchise history.
